I went to the cinema on the 6th June (for the
first time in my life I might add), to watch a very long awaited movie “Prometheus”,
I have been an avid fan of the Alien franchise, I have seen all of the movies
and with no word of a lie, I will admit I’ve watched them about 20-30 times,
and can remember them all basically word for word, I can even point out
differences in aliens and so on, a little bit sad some might say and that’s
fine, perhaps it is.
I have even read the book “Alien Omnibus” by Alan Dean Foster
twice!
(There are quite a few differences there as well I can tell you, but Alan did a great job!)
(There are quite a few differences there as well I can tell you, but Alan did a great job!)
So as you’d expect, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release
of this film for a long time, I have to admit I was very impressed with the
effects, they really were fantastic, I went again to the cinema on the 9th
June to watch the movie again, because I wanted to be sure I missed nothing.
Sufficed to say that for those of you who have not yet seen
this movie, you will be going home with questions rattling around upstairs as I
did on both occasions
I think Ridley Scott is one hell of a director, and though
I’ve never met him, I would not refuse the chance if it arose, his movies have
in my mind been some of the best memories of my younger years.
The Prometheus is primarily focused on DNA, well DNA in its
purest form as some might say, used in what we are led to believe as a weapon;
what I failed to understand is why we saw at the very beginning what I would
consider a sacrificial engineer willingly ingesting the very same DNA which is
represented as a black liquid.
We see clearly that there is a ship above: I suppose watching,
and his own genetic make up and DNA strands begin to deteriorate and he falls
into the water fall after his bones disintegrate, some strands obviously
survived mixing with various other micro-organisms on the Earth, creating a new
life form; humans.
But why I ask do we find that the “Engineers” are planning
to return to Earth to destroy what they created?
The drawings in the caves in my view appeared to be a
welcome message, inviting humans to come and find them,
But why lead humans to a planet that appears in my view to
be used as a testing ground for weapons of mass destruction?
There are many, many questions that I would like answers to
about this film, I loved it don’t get me wrong, it really was a good film, but
lots of things kept making me wonder.
I don’t understand why Dr. Shaw was never questioned or
looked at despite her ordeal of emergency cesarean; no one ever questioned why
she was in what I consider to be a state of disorientation shock, she clearly
looked unstable and in pain, but no one questioned her whatsoever.
This movie was intended to be a prequel to Alien, though in
my view its connection is difficult to be grasped, because of where the
Engineer died (In the EEV) and the fact that the ship was destroyed, I think
though that a second one is in the making, or so I’ve heard, I can only assume
that it will be that one that makes the connection, perhaps the space jockey is
Dr. Shaw, as I think that she too would have to use the suit to control the
ship and perhaps it was her ship that she escaped in that held the face
huggers, that would eventually create the Xenomorphs.
We all saw the enormous face hugger that over powered the
last engineer, I think it was possibly that size because of how it was
conceived, it was again, mixed with different DNA and what not, so I think if
they do make another movie, it might focus on Dr. Shaw’s ship that she and
David acquired, perhaps it was her who crash landed on LV-426, where David was
still remains unclear to me, but I feel certain that that’s the way it would
go.
We saw the Alien from the Engineer, we saw its jaw line and
its differences, so I can only assume what the Nostromo crew found was in fact
Dr. Shaw, just they never looked closely enough to realize it was a
biomechanical suit she was wearing.
(Please also note, the large bone running down the front of the suit, it's not clear why it's there)
I love the way this movie makes you wonder, and for that I
give it a rating of 7 out of 10, it really was good and I hope those of you who
have not seen it, head out soon to view it, its worth watching I assure you.
But trust me when I say, you will probably come up with the
same conclusion that I have, I may be wrong, and if I am I will be equally
happy, I do sincerely hope another movie is made, perhaps Dr. Shaw did make it
to the engineers home world, but who knows what was lurking in her ships cargo
hold??
